Zhao Jing, associate professor/doctoral advisor, director of transportation system engineering department of our school, has made progress in the research of intersection optimization control. Variable structure optimization design of road traffic is a hotspot worth studying in recent years. By dynamically using of intersection space resource, the lane can be used for multiple directions within a signal cycle, which significantly improves the capacity of the intersection, and provides a new solution to the alleviation of urban traffic congestion.

In this study, the author further improved the proposed control strategy and applied it to the scene with limited number of lanes and queuing space. Besides, the geometric layout of lanes, lane function division, signal control and management measures were integrated and optimized, and good control effects were gained. The research results were published in IEEE Transactions on ITS, with website link https://doi.org/10.1109/TITS.2020.2971353.

Zhao Jing’s research focused on the theory and technology of road traffic flow modeling and optimization design. To satisfy the great demand of improving urban road traffic congestion, a series of innovated design methodologies to improve road capacity and efficiency were put forward, which broke through the problem of its operation stability and developed the variable structure optimization design theory. The research results have been applied to more than 40 cities domestic and abroad, improving the optimal utilization level of road resources. His research has been funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China for Young Scholars, National Natural Science Foundation of China (General Program), as well as intersection cooperation program, and awarded as the top young talents in Shanghai. The research results have been published in more than 20 SCI/SSCI journals domestic and abroad, and won the science and technology progress award of both the Ministry of education and Shanghai Municipality. At the same time, as an expert of the Traffic Administration Bureau of the Ministry of Public Security, Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality, China Road Traffic Safety Think-tank Committee, he insisted on combining scientific research with social needs, committed to applying research results to social practice, and actively made suggestions for improving urban traffic problems.

In order to speed up the implementation of the deployment of "double first-class" construction and build a world-class business school, our school has formulated “the incentive measures for research achievements of top journal papers and political advices published by the School of Business of Shanghai University for Science and Technology”, to encourage in-service teachers to actively apply for various important vertical projects and high-level scientific research awards, and further improve the research level and social influence domestic and abroad.
