“Four Combinations” to Make the Classroom Lecture Vivid and Effective —— the Open Class “Etiquette in Business Communication” by Xie Yuan, an associate professor of the Department of Public Administration

Updated:2021-10-28

Dr. Xie Yuan of the Department of Public Administration gave an open class about reception etiquette on the afternoon Oct 27. Several teachers of the department and undergraduates 2019 majoring in Public Administration were present in the class. Although, reception etiquette is a small issue of “Secretary Science of Management”, it is really a significant link of the secretary practice. The sufficient and appropriate etiquette affects the image and development of organizations. Therefore, in order to let students understand and master the detailed and complex etiquette in a short session, “Four Combination”was carefully designed by Dr. Xie to make the class vivid and effective.

The course combined online with  offline teaching. “Secretary Science of Management” has been uploaded on the online platform of the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology which has a collection of teaching materials such as video clips. Due to the short time of class, triviality  and complexation of reception etiquette, and the shared characteristics between reception etiquette and day-to-day etiquette, it is not difficult for students to study on their won. So, watching teaching videos and materials had been arranged for them before class. An online session was purposely inputted during the class. The group work were uploaded to the platform and be visible to all to enourage class participation.

This course combined teaching with  discussion by groups. The teaching focused on three aspects: what is the reception etiquette? how can we treat Chinese traditional etiquette and foreign etiquette? what are the principles of reception etiquette? In the clas, Dr. Xie introduced the celebrities' understanding of etiquette and culture, such as Confucius, Konosuke Matsushita, FEI Xiaotong, etc. to broaden students' horizon. At the same time, Dr. Xie enumerated several vivid and interesting practical examples to further impressed on students. The second part was case study by groups. The students discussed enthusiastically and brainstormed collectively. Judging from the uploaded results, students obtained a good command of reception etiquette.

This course combines knowledge review and testing. This open class explored the principles underlying  etiquette instead of the specifics of  etiquette. When exploring the etiquette, students could recall the online learning knowledge and achieve further testing through case study at the same time.

This course combined subject knowledge with ideology and politics. This open class influenced students silently. The modern reception etiquette absorbs the essence of our traditional etiquette and reflects the inheritance and development of traditional etiquette. When incorporating foreign etiquette, we should follow the principle of beauty and unity, harmony but difference. Our students should be conveyed the message of cultural confidence, civilization and harmony of ideological and political elements. At the end of the class, Dr. Xie hoped that the students could unite knowledge and practice and the reception etiquette knowledge can be applied in real life.

The open class comes up as a big success attributable to the elaborative class design and wonderful teaching by Dr. Xie and the active participation of students.
